It’s hard to explain what depression feels like when it creeps in slowly. You might notice that your days feel heavier, or that your energy just isn’t what it used to be. Sometimes the smallest things start to feel like too much. Whether this has been building over time or came on after a specific event, you don’t have to figure it out by yourself.
At Intuitive Counseling, we meet people where they are. Our Charleston therapists provide in-person sessions at our South Carolina office and virtual sessions for clients across the state. If you’re ready to talk with someone, give us a call at (843) 944-2283.
Trust a Therapist With Many Years of Experience
The therapists at Intuitive Counseling work with adults and adolescents facing a wide range of challenges. We don’t rely on scripts or fixed processes. Every session is shaped by your input and your goals. We might use cognitive approaches, relational techniques, or other therapies, depending on what fits your experience.
Our practice was co-founded by Jennie Ozan, Psy.D., and Leigh Rzepecki, LCSW, CADC. With over 25 years of combined experience, our team offers thoughtful, individualized care. We also collaborate with other healthcare providers when helpful and welcome clients who are currently taking medication or exploring that option.

Depression Can Present in Many Forms
There’s no single way this shows up. Some people feel emotionally flat, while others get irritable or overwhelmed by things they normally handle well. It may interfere with your sleep, shift your appetite, or leave you feeling unmotivated at work or school. You might still be functioning on the outside, but feel disconnected from your life.
Lack of Motivation or Emotional Numbness
Getting through the day can start to feel like going through the motions. Things that once brought joy may not land the same way. You may not feel sadness so much as emptiness, or you may feel like your emotions are muted.
Irritability and Mental Fatigue
For some, depression shows up as frustration or agitation. You might feel impatient more often, or find it difficult to concentrate. Focus can fade quickly, and mental exhaustion may feel just as strong as physical tiredness.
Sleep Disruption and Energy Loss
You may have trouble falling asleep, or wake up feeling like you haven’t rested at all. Some people sleep more than usual and still feel tired. You may also notice changes in appetite or digestion, especially during stressful periods.
Regardless of the Cause, We Can Help
Some clients come in with a clear story. Others don’t. Both are valid. You might be responding to a recent loss, a medical condition, a relationship strain, or something that doesn’t have a name yet. Our job is to help you talk through what’s happening and figure out what might help.
Depression After Life Transitions
Even positive changes, like a move, a graduation, or becoming a parent, can stir up hard feelings. Some life transitions bring grief or instability, and others leave people feeling unmoored. We help clients explore the emotional impact of change and begin to build steadier ground.
Do You Feel as if You’ve Always Been Depressed?
Some people carry a mood that never fully lifts. That feeling may come and go, or it may be consistent over years. Therapy can provide a place to look at those patterns and begin shifting them, one step at a time.
Depression Related to Identity, Burnout, or Shame
You may be trying to make sense of how your life experiences, identity, or cultural background intersect with your mental health. We welcome those conversations. Whether the pain comes from isolation, discrimination, internalized pressure, or something else, it deserves space.
Depression Therapy FAQs
How do I know if what I’m feeling is depression?
You don’t need to be sure. If you’ve been feeling unlike yourself for a while, that’s enough reason to reach out. You’re not expected to diagnose the problem before starting therapy.
Will therapy help even if I don’t want to talk about everything?
Yes. We meet you where you are. If you’re not ready to share something, that’s okay. We can start with what you feel comfortable naming and go from there.
What if I’ve already tried therapy?
That happens. Sometimes therapy wasn’t the right fit. Sometimes life wasn’t in the right place to support that work. If you want to try again, we’ll help match you with someone who works differently.
Do you offer support for postpartum depression?
We do. Our therapists work with new parents navigating depression, anxiety, and identity shifts during or after pregnancy. This is a time when a lot goes unspoken. We offer a space to talk about all of it.
