Not all eating disorders look the same, and we are here to help regardless of your presenting issues and concerns. Some clients walk through our doors with a diagnosis already in hand, but others have no idea what to call their experience; they simply know that something about food, their body, or how they feel around eating just isn’t right. Whether things have spiraled quickly or have been hard for a long time, we are here to talk it through. If you’re ready to take a step, call our Charleston office at (843) 944-2283. We offer in-person and telehealth sessions for adults and teens throughout South Carolina.
Our Approach to Eating Disorder Therapy
We understand that food issues rarely exist in a vacuum. There’s often anxiety, perfectionism, shame, or trauma just beneath the surface. You may be caught in strict routines, or bouncing between extremes. Our therapists start by listening. Together, we’ll explore how these patterns took hold and what it might look like to feel more at peace.
This is not a one-size-fits-all approach. We collaborate with each client to find what works best. That might involve talk therapy, somatic techniques, support with emotion regulation, or referrals to dietitians or physicians when medical input is needed. If you’re stepping down from residential or IOP, we can be part of your transition plan and offer coordination with your other providers.
Types of Eating Disorders We Treat
Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia may involve a preoccupation with weight, calorie control, or strict rules around food and exercise. Many clients also describe a sense of numbness or detachment that food restriction temporarily quiets. We work to understand the function of the behavior while supporting physical and emotional restoration.
Bulimia Nervosa
Bulimia often includes cycles of binging and purging or other compensatory behaviors like fasting or over-exercising. Shame, secrecy, and anxiety frequently follow each episode. Therapy focuses on building awareness of triggers, interrupting the binge/purge cycle, and finding more supportive ways to manage distress.
Binge Eating Disorder
Binge eating involves consuming large amounts of food, often quickly or in secret, and usually with a strong sense of loss of control. Clients often carry deep guilt or confusion about these episodes. We help clients understand what drives the urge and develop new tools that don’t rely on willpower alone.
Other Disordered Eating
Not everyone meets diagnostic criteria, but that doesn’t mean it’s not serious. Many people come to us struggling with compulsive tracking, constant food guilt, body checking, or obsessive thoughts around food. If it’s interfering with your life or sense of self, it’s worth addressing.
A Word About Body Image
We know how deeply body image can impact self-worth, confidence, and how someone moves through the world. Our therapists practice from a Health at Every Size perspective. We do not promote weight loss, and we reject shame as a motivator. Instead, we help clients build a relationship with their body that is rooted in respect and understanding, not punishment.
Recovery Can Look Different for Everyone
Some people come in ready to make big changes. Others are still unsure if they want to let go of the behaviors. That’s okay. We meet you where you are. Our goal is not to push, but to partner with you in working toward more freedom, more clarity, and a life that isn’t dictated by numbers, urges, or rules.
If you’re ready to feel less stuck, less ashamed, and more in tune with yourself, we’re ready to walk alongside you.
FAQs About Eating Disorder Therapy in Charleston
What if I’m not sure I have an eating disorder?
You don’t need a formal diagnosis to get support. Many people struggle with food or body image without fitting into a specific category. If something feels off, that’s enough of a reason to reach out.
Do you coordinate with dietitians or doctors?
Yes, and we strongly believe in team care when needed. If you’re already working with a dietitian, physician, or psychiatrist, we’ll collaborate to support your full recovery.
Is this the right place if I’ve tried therapy before?
Absolutely. Many of our clients have been through treatment before. Some have relapsed, others never found a good fit. We’re here to offer a fresh, nonjudgmental start.
Do you see teens?
Yes. Some of our therapists work with adolescents. We’ll talk with caregivers first to understand the situation and explain what involvement might look like.
Will I be forced to change before I’m ready?
No. We respect your pace. You set the goals, and we support you without pressure or timelines.
