Talk to our therapists at Intuitive Counseling, and avoid being caught up in toxic diet culture and the chase of societal ideals. Let us support you on navigating, once and for all, the end of finding the next “Monday morning diet.”
We consider ourselves shepherds in spreading the 10 Principles of Intuitive Eating written by Evelyn Tribole, MS, RDN, CEDRD-S and Elyse Resch, MS, RDN, CEDS-S, FAND, and honoring and supporting the work of Dr. Lindo Bacon, author of Health at Every Size. The Health at Every Size or HAES is an approach to public health which seeks to downplay weight loss as a healthy goal and reduce stigma towards people in larger bodies.
As therapists with experience treating and studying eating disorders, we understand that shaming and instilling guilt related to what someone eats only causes more eating problems! Eating problems then trigger body dissatisfaction and negatively impact mental and physical health.
A Personalized Approach to Treatment
Intuitive Counseling was founded by Dr. Jennie Ozan, Psy.D., and Leigh Rzepecki, LCSW, CADC. Together, they have more than 50 years of combined clinical experience. We know that no two people experience an eating disorder the same way. During the first sessions, we learn about your personal history, the challenges you face right now, and the changes you want to work toward.
Our approach is not limited to the eating behaviors themselves. Many times, an eating disorder is connected to deeper concerns such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or perfectionism. We address those influences along with the symptoms, which can give recovery a more stable foundation.
Our Treatment Philosophy
Treating an eating disorder effectively and safely typically cannot be done by a therapist alone. Our therapists encourage clients who have active eating disorders to use a multidisciplinary approach to treatment. Our therapist will act as the point of contact for the client and regularly reach out and collaborate with other practitioners who are supporting the individual on their recovery journey. This can include, but is not limited to, a registered dietitian nutritionist, a psychiatrist, a medical profession such as a primary care doctor, and collaborating with teams at a previous organization.
Individuals who are stepping down from, or up to, a higher level of care to treat their eating disorder will also find our team knowledgeable and understanding of that process. Our relationships in the eating disorder community afford us the direct connection one may need with seeking more comprehensive support than outpatient level of care.
All therapists at Intuitive Counseling work from the Intuitive Eating lens and Health at Every Size (HAES) philosophy. There is no right size, weight, shape or way of living. We know diets don’t work and self-compassion is the key to relieving the antiquated and shame-ridden themes of our diet-focused society.
Types of Eating Disorders We Work With
Studies estimate that nearly 30 million people in the United States will experience an eating disorder at some point in their lives. These conditions affect people of all ages, backgrounds, and body types. By understanding that eating disorders are common and treatable, it becomes easier to talk openly about them and seek the help needed for recovery.
Anorexia Nervosa
People living with anorexia often have strong fears about weight gain and may see their bodies in a way that does not match reality. In therapy, we focus on gradual changes in eating habits, building healthier ways of thinking, and developing a more realistic and compassionate view of the body.
Bulimia Nervosa
Bulimia can bring a cycle of binge eating followed by purging or other compensating behaviors. We work together to interrupt that cycle, look at what drives it, and develop new strategies for coping with stress and difficult emotions.
Binge Eating Disorder
Binge eating disorder involves repeated episodes of eating large amounts of food with a feeling of being out of control. Treatment helps uncover triggers, reduce shame, and create a calmer, more balanced relationship with food.
Other Specified Feeding or Eating Disorders (OSFED)
Some people experience harmful eating patterns that do not fit neatly into one diagnosis. We design treatment based on your specific symptoms and needs rather than a single label.
How We Support Recovery
Recovery is more than changing the way you eat. It often involves looking closely at beliefs, emotions, and experiences that have shaped your relationship with food and your body. Therapy sessions may include building self-worth, learning to manage emotions, and finding practical ways to respond to triggers without turning to harmful behaviors.
For teenagers, parents or guardians may play an important role in the process. We help families understand how to provide consistent support at home while also giving the teen space to speak openly in individual sessions.
When it is helpful, we coordinate with dietitians, medical providers, and other professionals so clients have a complete support network.
